  1. Six things we learned about the future of energy security at UK summit

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/apr/25/five-things-we-learned-about-the-future-of-energy-security-at-uk-summit

This month saw the UK and the International Energy Agency gather officials from 60 counties for a summit on the future of energy security. This article discusses the key takeaways: the importance of energy security, the need to step away from fossil fuels, contrasting views (particularly from the US) against renewables, China’s role in the renewable revolution, nuclear as a ‘common ground’ resource, and the difficulty of sourcing critical minerals.

  1. Average energy bill in Great Britain to fall 9% as Trump tariffs hit gas prices

https://www.theguardian.com/money/2025/apr/25/average-energy-bill-in-britain-set-to-fall-9-in-july-in-relief-for-households

The economic shock waves triggered by US trade tariffs have caused global gas market prices to slide, resulting in a predicted 9% fall of the UK government’s cap on energy bills. However, this article stresses that relying on international markets for energy will always result in tumultuous fuel prices. The only way to securely lower our energy costs is to focus on green energy here in the UK that can finally bring down bills for good.

This article honours his legacy as the ‘Green Pope’ and shares how he called for us to ‘care for our common home’, confronted oil executives, and spoke up for the people most endangered by climate change.

  1. China’s wind and solar capacity exceeds thermal power for the first time

https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/cop/chinas-wind-solar-capacity-exceeds-thermal-power-first-time-energy-regulator-2025-04-25/

At the end of March, China’s wind and solar power generation increased to 1,482 gigawatts (GW), exceeding the power capacity of fossil fuel-based thermal energy for the first time in China’s history. Despite China still commissioning new coal-fired power, it has also embarked on rapid expansions of wind and solar energy. China set a goal of 1, 200 GW of wind and solar capacity by 2030, but met the target 6 years early in 2024.

  1. Our Power, Our Planet: Earth Day 2025

https://www.solarpowerportal.co.uk/earth-days-aims-are-impossible-without-energy-storage/

The theme of Earth Day 2025 was Our Power, Our Planet. This called for the tripling of renewable generation by 2030. However, the turning of renewable energy commitments into actions brings complications as stated by manager at Balance Power, Dan Levy. Dan argues that a dramatic increase in global battery energy storage systems (BESS) is vital to achieving net zero, to balance and distribute intermittent power produced by wind and solar energy sources.
